Frequently Asked Questions

Wellness Babylon therapy

What is psychotherapy, and how can it help me?

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy or counseling, is a collaborative process between a trained therapist and a client that focuses on exploring thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to improve emotional well-being. It provides a safe, confidential space for individuals to address a wide range of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues, trauma, and personal growth.

Through psychotherapy, you can gain insight into patterns and challenges in your life, develop coping strategies, and learn new skills to manage difficult emotions. Whether you're struggling with specific issues or seeking personal growth, psychotherapy is tailored to meet your needs and goals.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

A therapist's role is to help you explore your thoughts and feelings in a deeper, more structured way. Your therapist offers professional guidance to address mental health issues, work through personal challenges, and improve emotional well being.

While friends can offer empathy and understanding, they may not have the knowledge or training to deal with complex emotional or psychological issues.  A friend may be influenced by their personal feelings about you and the situation. They may offer advice based on their own experiences or opinions.

Therapists maintain a professional, objective perspective, providing unbiased guidance and support.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Our work together is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.

What should I expect during my first therapy session?

The fist session typically focuses on gathering information about your background, current concerns, and goals you would like to work on in therapy. This is an opportunity for you to share what brought you to therapy and what you hope to achieve. The therapist will explain the structure of therapy, confidentiality, and how you will work together during this process.

It is normal to feel nervous or unsure during your first session. You are not expected to share deep personal details right away. Building trust with your therapist takes time. Your therapist will create a safe, non judgmental space where your can feel comfortable at your own pace.

How long will it take?

Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time counseling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success.
